Course Description: This course will review anatomy and physiology relevant to the swallowing process, discuss normal swallowing function and development, and present assessment and therapy strategies/techniques. Students will be expected to demonstrate familiarity with oropharyngeal function, techniques to stimulate and desensitize oropharyngeal reflexes, videofluoroscopic and clinical evaluation procedures, and primary remediation strategies.
Prerequisites: CD 347, CD 484, CD 511
Course Evaluation:
1. Three examinations, tentatively scheduled for Feb.7th, March 28th,
and May 9th. Exams will be cumulative and comprehensive. The final will
be a clinical [aka bedside] dysphagia evaluation on client or volunteer
or your choice (at least mild problem must be present), to include evaluation
report, dietary/ compensatory recommendations and treatment protocol if
warranted. This must be videotaped and supervised on-site by a certified
SLP with dysphagia experience. Those students planning to enroll
in the July clinic on campus may take an incomplete, and perform the clinical
evaluation at that time. [Total 300 points]
2. Participation in weekly chat or discussion boards. [Total
100 points]
3. Two dysphagia screenings. One will use the MAST, and the other a
facility or WKU protocol. Submit by fax to 270-745-6114.
Due on or before March 14th. [Total 50 points]
4. Two group web presentations, based on research articles published
or presented within the past three years, to focus on normal function and/or
development, and therapy techniques. These will be presented in groups
of 3 or 4. Format may vary, but should be compatible with Microsoft
products. Compare and contrast current research, and analyze
relevance to SLP practice. Rated according to content, cohesion/balance,
and use of multimedia. See Assignment Guidelines for details.
Tentatively scheduled for Feb. 28th and May 2nd. [Total 150 points].
5. Two hands-on oral-motor assignments to be videotaped or scheduled
by appointment on campus. See Assignment Guidelines for details.
[Total 50 points]
6. Extra Credit: a) Pop quiz – 15 points; b) 3D Anatomy
Project – 35 points. See Assignment Guidelines for details.

e. Define disorders and remediation techniques in pediatric and adult
populations.
f. Analyze swallowing function based on videofluorographic and clinical
evaluation.

information
selection, synthesis, analysis, specificity and clarity.

patients.
j. Demonstrate ability to analyze current dysphagia research and explain
relevance to SLP
practice.
