Students will be expected to demonstrate familiarity with oropharyngeal function, techniques to stimulate and desensitize oropharyngeal reflexes, videofluoroscopic and clinical evaluation procedures, and primary remediation strategies.

Prerequisites: CD 347, CD 484, CD 511

Co-requisite: CD 502, CD 590/591

Course Evaluation:

1. Four examinations, tentatively scheduled for Feb.7th, March 28th, and May 9th.  Exams will be cumulative and comprehensive. The final will be a clinical (aka "Bedside") dysphagia evaluation on client or volunteer or your choice (at least mild problem must be present), to include evaluation report, dietary/ compensatory recommendations and treatment protocol if warranted. This must be videotaped and supervised on-site by a certified SLP with dysphagia experience. See Dr. Brindle if you are unable to arrange for a clinical dysphagia evaluation at your externship site.[Total 300 points]
2.  Four quizzes, to be announced a week in advance.  [Total 100 points]
3. Two dysphagia screenings. One will use the MAST, and the other a facility or WKU protocol.   Due on or before March 14th. [Total 50 points]
4. Two 20-25 minute group presentations, based on research articles published or presented within the past three years, to focus on normal function and/or development, and therapy techniques. These will be presented in groups of 3 or 4, using Powerpoint and other multimedia as indicated, and shall compare and contrast current research, and analyze relevance to SLP practice. Tentatively due Feb. 28th and May 2nd. [Total 150 points]
5.  Two hands-on oral-motor assignments.  One will be in-class, and one by appointment. [Total 50 points]
6.  Extra Credit:  a)  Pop quiz - 15 points; b) 3D anatomy project - 35 points.
