Course Description - This course allows a student to obtain supervised clinical experience in community-based agencies which evaluate and treat individuals with a variety communication disorders. May be repeated for credit 3 times.
Pre-requisites- Permission of Instructor, CD 495 or CD 590-Clinical Internship, other graduate courses consistent with needs of the site.
Co-requisites - Other graduate courses consistent with needs of the site.

Course Evaluation:
Supervisor Evaluation forms will determine grade based on student's
clinical skills and
observations. Students will give a battery of tests, take a case history,
use clinic hours logs
to indicate amount of time and type of service given, maintain client
files; read, write, and
interpret reports.
KERA Element: School Based Decision Making and Primary Program
Course Requirements:
1. Must enroll in the appropriate section of CD 591-Clinical Externship
to receive
assignments.
2. Clinic hours must be summarized and submitted in the term completed
in order
to receive credit
toward ASHA requirements.
2. Meet with site Supervisor for evaluation conferences.
3. Attend all scheduled therapy sessions punctually and well-prepared.
*Reschedule all clinician-canceled therapy sessions with the
client, when possible.
*Put in writing for site supervisor how or when make-up session
will take place.
*If you must be absent, it is your responsibility to contact
site supervisor. If
absence is prolonged, notify the University and
site Supervisor about reason
for absence and jointly determine how externship
requirements can be
completed.
*Remain on-site for entire 8 weeks, unless authorized to leave
by WKU and site
supervisor.
4. Follow through on all administrative responsibilities accurately
within
deadlines.
*Conduct self in a professional manner at all times (dress and
actions).
Maintain client confidentiality. Don't gossip.
*Use the correct site required forms and formats for report
writing, observations,
and record keeping.
5. Maintain order and neatness in therapy areas.
*Clean up after therapy and return materials to proper places.
*Alert site and/or university supervisor about major problems
or concerns.
Solve other problems or conflicts with tact and
diplomacy.
6. Meet with site Supervisor, as needed, to discuss client progress.
Bring questions and come prepared to scheduled conferences.
If absent, written excuse and early notification
are necessary.
7. Create and implement lesson plans.
*Write instructional objectives
*Write task analysis
*Develop teaching strategies based on client's strengths and
weaknesses
*Write session evaluations on Progress Notes
8. Interview parents, clients, or spouses using appropriate questioning
and counseling
techniques.
9. Maintain close communication with clients, parents, and/or spouses
regarding
treatment goals and progress.
10. Review assessment materials and procedures with site Supervisor
before testing.
Timelines and format for reports are determined
by site supervisor.
11. Grading System- The Practicurn or Summative Evaluation forms will
be used
to determine the final grade (see point scales).
A- Exceptional Performance; successfully completed
all externship
requirements with very high level of competence
and independent performance.
B- Above Average Performance; successfully
completed all externship
requirements with high level of competences.
C. Average Performance; successfully completed
most of externship
requirements with competence.
D- Below Average Performance; did not successfully
complete many externship
requirements with minimal competence.
12. Clinicians are expected to 'adapt' to the work climate and culture.
Specifically
to dress appropriately, adopt agency schedules and
protocols, become an active
member of the faculty or staff, and to comport themselves
as graduate students
representing Western Kentucky University's Communication
Disorders program.
Things to Remember:
**TB test, physical exam, and proof of malpractice insurance must be on file to be assigned an externship.

in order to receive credit toward ASHA requirements.
