Reading Assignment: Classrooms That Work (CTW), Chapters 1 and 2, pp. 1-25

Before reading

CTW, Chapter 1, pp. 1-10: Review the Excellent Reading Teachers statement and any notes (from class) you took
about the statement.Your purpose for reading CTW, Chapter 1, pp. 1-10 is to read for any additional/new information
about effective reading teachers and their classrooms.

CTW, Chapter 2, pp. 11-25: Preview the chapter. Look at the headings, subheadings, and graphics. Skim the introduction
and the summary.

 

During reading

CTW, Chapter 1, pp. 1-10: Write down any new information you find while reading.

CTW, Chapter 2, pp. 11-25: Use the Q Note document while you read. Here's the question to answer as you read: How do
you create enthusiastic, independent learners? Put this question on the left side of the document and your responses on the
right. While you read make a list of the strategies you will include in your Reading Teacher's Notebook of Strategies. Some
examples include: reading conferences, helping students choose reading material, bookboards, and Readers' Chair.

 

After reading

CTW, Chapter 1, pp. 1-10: Be prepared to share your findings in class. Be sure to keep your notes about
effective reading teachers and effective classrooms together in one place.

CTW, Chapter 2, pp. 11-25: Bring your Q Notes to class so we can review them together. Using the three question format on
the course syllabus (in the section about the Reading Teacher's Notebook of Strategies), make pages for the strategies in this
chapter.
