Before, During, and After Reading Assignment Aid

Reading Assignment: Phonics They Use (Phonics), Chapters 5-6, pp. 53-84

Before reading

Phonics, Chapter 5, pp. 53-63: Print out the SQ3R chart and look it over before you begin reading.

Phonics, Chapter 6, pp. 64-84: Preview the chapter before you read.

During reading

Phonics, Chapter 5, pp. 53-63: Complete the SQ3R chart for this chapter. You will need to use the chart
as a guideline and write the information on your own paper since you won't have enough space on the chart.

Phonics, Chapter 6, pp. 64-84: Turn the main headings (the ones with stars) into "how do you do this" and
"what is this" questions. Then answer those questions that you generated. You should have seven questions.

After reading

Phonics, Chapter 5, pp. 53-63: Be prepared to answer questions about your chart in class.

Phonics, Chapter Chapter 6, pp. 64-84: Add the new strategies to the fluency strategies section of your Reading
Teacher's Notebook of Strategies. (How to do a word wall, OTB activities, and WORDO) We will do word
sorts in a later chapter. You might want to copy the high-utility wall words on pp. 72-73 to include in your
strategy notebook.
