CLASS DESCRIPTION: Terminology, theories, issues, and general approaches in educating gifted, creative, and talented young people
PREREQUISITES: None
REQUIRED TEXT: Clark, B. (2002). Growing up gifted: Developing the potential of children at home and at school (6th ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Merrill.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Familiarize students with the current laws and regulations for gifted students in Kentucky and in the United States.
- Know and be able to identify children who are gifted and talented intellectually as well in a specific academic aptitude, creativity, leadership, or the visual and/or the performing arts.
- Recognize and support the cognitive and the social-emotional needs of children and youth who are gifted and talented.
- Know the research in order to educate others concerning the mythology relating to gifted children.
- Describe services that can be matched to needs in order to ensure continuous progress.
- Know and use journals and web sites related to gifted child education.
GRADING FOR GTE 536
Grade of A
- 1. Come to "class" prepared and participate actively in discussions.
- 2. Complete all assignments in a comprehensive manner.
- 3. Read and review ten professional journal articles related to class topics.
- 4. Earn a 90 average on the two exams.
- 5. Plan (with instructorÕs approval) and develop two special projects that will extend your interest and expertise in educating gifted, talented, and creative students. Include a bibliography in APA style. The projects must be original work, work you develop during this semester. (It may not be one that is the compilation of other individualsÕ work.) The projects must be approved prior to the sixth week of the class.
Grade of B
- 1. Come to class prepared and participate actively in all discussions.
- 2. Complete all assignments in a comprehensive manner.
- 3. Earn a 80 average on the two exams.
- 4. Read and review eight professional journal articles related to class topics.
- 5. Plan (with instructorÕs approval) and develop one special project that will extend your interest and expertise in educating gifted, talented, and creative students. Include a bibliography in APA style. The project must be original work, work you develop during this semester. (It may not be one that is the compilation of other individualsÕ work.) The project must be approved prior to the sixth week of the class.
Grade of C

- 2. Complete all assignments in a comprehensive manner.
- 3. Earn a 70 average on the two exams.
- 4. Read and review six professional journal articles related to class topics.
Attendance Policy: Students are expected to participate in all sessions.
Plagiarism Policy: Plagiarism will result in failing the course.
