Goals for Peer Visits: The overall "goal" (more holistic way of looking at the visit): We are trying to increase networking, give participants a "safe" environment in which to problem-solve and "air" concerns regarding new implementations of literacy instruction as learned in KAELI, and to give participants perspectives into how other programs are planning for exemplary literacy instruction. The visiting peer is responsible for the write-up ... although last year both people drafted the write-up as a closing activity at the end of their visit. The person being visited is not receiving a "critique" of his/her program, but instead a very collaborative look at where they are and their plans for moving forward.
Documentation for Peer Visits: 1) Observe physical environment and note the following: A. What environmental print is present in the center? (types of print you see displayed in the room - signs, labels, posters, etc.)
B. What library (if any) is present and available for adult learners? Describe the check-out system if one exists. (This includes types of reading materials - newspapers, magazines, reference books, narrative and expository texts, varieties of genre.)
C. Describe the writing centers (including the types of papers/pens/materials that are present) that are available for adult learners.
D. How many computers and what types of software are available for adult learners? Concentrate specifically on literacy/language arts software. Is the Internet available on all computers?
E. What types motivational items (posters, quotes, etc.) exist in the center? Comment on the ones you think are most effective.
F. Describe the physical environment of the classroom(s) - tables and chairs, desks, comfortable couches/chairs (get a feel for the flexibility of group work).
2) "Grand Conversations" between peers should include the following: A. overall description and comparisons of each other's programs
B. idea of how many people served and in what capacity
C. sharing of resources (What did you see at this site that you would like to incorporate into your literacy instruction at your site?)
3) KAELI elements of visit: A. Discuss and document the greatest successes each of you have had since starting KAELI.
B. What are some ideas for how the text set has been or will be used?
C. What are some specific comments on Tasks performed so far that you have both experienced?
D. What are some strategies for how you have worked KAELI into your schedules, found adult learners for KAELI teaching experiences, and any general organizational skills employed to stay on top of all that being in KAELI requires?
