Introduction

We have been learning about families and how all families have certain needs. We have just read Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need. Think about these questions as you reflect upon the reading. What is a need? Everyone has needs. Are everyone's needs always provided for? How can you help people in need?

Remember each task will be completed as a group. Each member has a job to do so that each task is successfully completed.

Reader- The reader will read the material out loud to everyone in the group.

Material-You will need to gather all materials needed for each task.

Recorder- Your job is to write for the group and report your groups information to the class.

Task 1

We often see how people are different from each other. Although we are different, we are alike in some ways too. We all have needs. These needs allow us to lead healthy and safe lives.

Print out theWordWeb.doc. Print one word web for each member of the group.

1. The reader will reread the story aloud.

2. The material person should print out concept web for each member of the group.

3. Each person should write needs in the middle circle. In each circle connected to the middle one, you should identify things that are considered a need for you to live healthy and safe lives.

4. The recorder will compare the word webs.

Task 2

The Berestain Bears gave their clothing, toys, and money to those in need.

In this task, you will decide which items are a need. Click on to needs.docto complete this task. Circle the pictures that would be a need for a family to live healthy and safe.

  1. The material person should print out and provide document sheet for group and get any other materials needed.
  2. As a group look at the document sheet and decide which items would be a need.
  3. The recorder should circle the pictures that are a need.
  4. The reader should be prepared to share their findings and explain why they thought each picture would be a need.

Task 3

The Berenstain Bears helped many people with different needs. Your group must design a plan in which your class or school body could help those in need in your community.

Click on ProblemSolution.doc. This sheet will help you organize your thoughts. You must decide what the problem is and then plan to help these people with their problem. You must design a flyer to send to other classes in the school so that they are informed on what you are doing and how they can help.

The material person must print document for the group and get materials needed to create flyer.

The reader must read directions to the group.

The recorder must write down the problem and solutions on the document.

Evaluation

I have created a rubric for you. As you examine how well you did in each task, ask yourself these questions; Did I do my best? Did I get along with others in the group? Did I share the responsibility of each task? Did I complete each task?

I hope that you have learned that everyone has needs but too often some people do not have these needs provided for. We can help each other by simple acts of love. Next time when you want to throw away old clothing, I hope you reflect upon the reading Berenstain Bears Think of Those in Need, and remember ways you can help people.
