What
you Know First by Patricia
MacLachlan, Barry
Moser (Illustrator). This book is an excellent prompt for writing
childhood memories, making lists of special childhood moments, or reflecting on
the trauma of moving.
Wishing by
Ruth
Tiller, Debrah
Santini (Illustrator).
This book uses verse-like text to express to someone the types of things you
would wish for them. It can serve as a prompt for a journal of
wishes.
Black
and White by David
Macaulay. This book appears to tell four stories at once . . . or
maybe not. Clever illustrations combined with carefully chosen text
invites the reader to try and simultaneously juggle the plot(s).
Paddle Whispers by Doug Wood. Through poetic text and drawings, woven gracefully with quotes, Douglas Wood traces a timeless journey by paddle and canoe that renews the spirit.
Felix
by Annette
Langen, Constanza
Droop (Illustrator).
This is one of a series of four (Felix
Explores Planet Earth : With Six Letters from Felix and a Fold-Out World Map,
Felix
Travels Back in Time : Includes Six Pull-Out Letters and Fold-Out Map and Time
Line, Felix's
Christmas Around the World) books about the stuffed rabbit named
Felix. This book provides the model for incorporating storytelling, letter
writing, and factual information in one piece of work. Great appeal for
younger children, but has information and applications that extend beyond the
primary level.
Two
Bad Ants by
Chris
Van Allsburg. Two
Bad Ants allows children (and everyone else) to experience the world through an
ant's point of view. This book provides a prompt for writing from
different points of view.
The
Ant Bully by John
Nickle. This book
addresses point-of-view and the nature of bullies.
Night
Visitors by Ed
Young. This is a Chinese folktale that allows a young man to
view the world through an ant's perspective.
