Introduction

Butterflies love to spend their day gathering nectar and enjoying the view of a garden full of beautiful and colorful plants and flowers. Our school needs a place to welcome these fascinating and beneficial creatures. As these creatures enjoy their surroundings you will enjoy a quiet view from a bench in the middle of the garden.

The Task

3. Then go to page 8 "Alluring Pollinators" This section of the web site will be helpful with the presentation that you will help prepare.

4. Read it carefully and take notes on important facts that are new to you. Make sure that you use the skills that you have learned in our reading class to help with the comprehension of this reading material. You will need to know what Pollination is and why it is important to us.

Post reading: After the research you gather at this site, you willl present a short presentation to the principal to persuade him or her to support the need for a butterfly garden at our school. A persuasive letter would be an excellent way to present this idea to him. You will need to recall the steps to writing a persuasive letter that we learned in class and follow them as you write your own. Remember that the lead is very important and you want to keep the reader's attention with an interesting "HOOK"

You will find the rubric for the Research part and writing part of the project in theEVALUATION RUBRIC at the end of this webquest.

Pre-reading: Brainstorm things that a plant needs in order to survive. Think about what you have learned in your science classes to help with this task.

During reading:

1. When you go to the above website, look under "Planting your own Butterfly Garden"

2. Click on "Basic Design Elements for a Butterfly Garden" This will help give you some ideas of how to lay out your garden.

3. You will also need to click on "Butterfly Garden Plant List" this will help with the following post reading task. You may want to make notes of what you learn during this research.

Post reading: After you have researched this web site, you will need to include 3 to 5 flowering plants to your design and correctly label them. Don't forget to personalize your garden so that it is also welcoming to students who would like to spend their time reading in the garden. Colorful pictures are attractive and make the viewers more interested in your designs.
