Introduction

You are hired to find out why the old lady is dying. You are a dietician, someone who has a degree in healthy foods. The old lady's family is concerned about the type of foods that she chooses to eat. What could the old lady eat that would keep her healthy? Could she have a diet that is full of junk food and still die? Think about the things that you like to eat and decide if they are a healthy choice. What is the weirdest thing that you have ever eaten? Have you ever eaten fried worms?

What type of diet do you suggest for the old lady and yourself as well?

The Task

Task 1

You have just read or listened to the story There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly. Your first task is to create a healthy well thought out menu for the old lady's family to enforce. The menu needs to cover three (3) meals a day for five (5) days. When creating your menu, you must use the food guide pyramid as the basis. You will work in groups of four and each person will have a specific job to do. You must have each of the following:

  • Reader-main purpose is to read to the group.
  • Materials-main purpose is to make sure that the group has the materials needed to complete the job (ex. pencil, paper, etc.).
  • Scribe-main purpose is to do the writing for the group.
  • Reporter-main purpose is to present the information found to the class and/or teacher.

Task 2

The old lady is at it again! She decided not to follow your advise. She has been caught eating strange things again! You need to read or listen to the following books.

To follow up and compare what we have read, we will complete a Venn Diagram that compares at least two of the four books. Now that you know about her habit of eating unhealthy food, you need to fill in a story map for another book in this series. As a class we will vote on the book that we wish to publish.

The Process

The first thing you will need to do is to become familiar with the food guide pyramid. To do this, click on the pyramid above or below. Connected to the link above is an article that discusses the pyramid. Read the article and be ready to include that information when creating your menu. Also include the information discussed in class.

When you feel that you are comfortable with the pyramid, be sure to play the following food guide pyramid games to test you knowledge.

Coloring Page Mission Nutrition

When you feel that you have come up with the correct menu, you are to test your menu in the food tracker.

The first activity will have you to display what you know about the food guide pyramid and apply it to real life. This will also help you to think about how the food you eat falls into the pyramid. The second activity has you to create your own story that will resemble to first. For this task, you have to use your pre-writing skills to create a new story.
