#3-When Wilbur calculated how long it was going  to take him to get home, he just sat right down and cried big, wet, piggy puddles because he was so tired and hungry. That's when he decided he might as well make the best of a bad situation and get something to eat. He remembered a nursery rhyme his mother had sung to him about a little piggy going to market, so he reasoned that a market must be a place where you could get something to eat.

This Little Piggy

This little piggy went to market;

This little piggy stayed home;

This little piggy had roast beef;

This little piggy had none;

This little piggy said,

"Wee, wee, wee," all the way home.

 He set off in search of a market because pigs have enormous appetites, or do they? In order to help Wilbur, you need to know what he eats.

This quest will take you to a site where you can learn more about pigs. Your assignment is research the pig and do a report that covers these topics: anatomy, diet, habitat, range, life cycle, enemies, and other pertinent facts about pigs. Before you actually begin writing your paper, submit an outline to the teacher. You may use the information on outlines that you have in your writing folder . you may also use your English book as a reference. Once your outline is approved, you may begin pre-writing. The next step will be to peer conferencing, followed by revisions. I will be assisting you throughout the writing process. Your final draft should be 2-3 pages in length and will be scored using the rubric provided. Each section of the scoring rubric is worth 4 points. He walked about a mile until he came to the outskirts of a town. He stopped to ask somebody where he could find a market, but everybody he asked just looked at him with a puzzled look on their face. He was so discouraged! When he was about ready to give up and lie down in a field beside the road, he spotted a building ahead that looked like a market. With renewed energy, he picked up his pace to a fast trot and headed in that direction. He was so excited! Food at last, he thought to himself.

He could just feel the crunch of a tasty red apple in his mouth, or maybe the market would have some leafy green cabbage. His mouth was watering from the anticipation of food. He opened the door of the market and made his way inside, but alas, he was surprised to find that he could not read the words on the sign. He had heard about a different language called Spanish and much to his dismay, he feared the words might be written in that language. Can you help Wilbur translate the Spanish words for common foods into English? If you are successful, Wilbur may have the strength to make it back home. You may work with a partner to compete the assignment and it is worth 25 points. The site for helping Wilbur is at www.enchantedlearning.com. Click here to go to the site. When you get to the site, choose Spanish Activities. Scroll down to Food and Eating in Spanish. Next, choose Fruits. Print off the page and match the fruits to the Spanish words listed in the box at the bottom of the page. Beside the Spanish word, label it in English also. Repeat this process for the Vegetables worksheet. You may explore other Spanish themes such as people, animals, etc. while you are there if time permits.
