Process

(Pre-reading)

Before you get started with your research, write down what you think the answers will be to the questions that were listed on the TASK section of the webquest.  Sometimes you have an idea of what something is like before you ever actually research it.  And sometimes you find out that you were right about your ideas, and sometimes you find out that you were wrong.  It’s a good idea to compare your knowledge before and after you do research, that way you can see how much you have really learned.

I have assigned you to work in groups of four.  In your groups you each have been assigned a specific role.  You will be given one of the following job titles:

·        Head Researcher

·        Head Caption Writer

·        Head Poster Artist

·        Head Question and Evaluation Scribe

1.      The first part of this webquest falls under the direction of the Head Question and Evaluation Scribe.  Your Job is to write down the answers to all of the questions listed in the task section.  Remember that you’re going to answer the questions for the first time before you actually travel to and research the biomes.  Click on the following link to print out a form that lists the questions.  QUESTIONS

Also you need to fill out the KWL chart found at this link. KWL CHART

2.      This second part of the assignment is when the Head Researcher will direct the group.  Your job is to click on the Internet links and explore the web-sites to help the group find the actual answers to the task questions.  Your job is to direct the group, not do all of the research on your own.  Be sure to write down the answers to any of the questions as you find them, and make sure you write down the web-site address if you find something you think you will want to go back to a look at again. when you're ready to begin your research just click on the following link to get started.

Biome Research

After you begin to do your research use the following links to graphic organizers to help you to find and organize your information.

BIOME PROPERTIES GRAPHIC ORGANIZER

ADAPTATION GRAPHIC ORGANIZER

3.      It’s time to make your posters.  Step 3 will fall under the direction of the Head Caption Writer.  The poster must contain five captions.  It will contain one lengthy caption that describes in detail all of the characteristics of the biome that you found in your research.  When you write this caption, assume that the wildlife organization has no prior knowledge of this biome and you are telling them about it for the first time.  The other four captions will deal with the organisms that you discovered in the biomes.  Each caption must describe in detail the characteristics of the organism and must explain any adaptations that the organism has.  You must explain in the caption how the organism’s adaptations help it to survive in its environment.  As the Head Caption Writer you must filter through all of the information and work with the group to decide on the perfect captions for your poster.

4.      Now it’s time for the Head Poster Artist to do your job.  You will direct the group in creating a beautiful poster.  You will help the group to decide where the captions will be placed on the poster, how the organisms will be drawn on the poster, how the biome will be drawn, and any other decisions dealing with the looks of the poster.

5.      Finally, it’s time to bring the Head Question and Evaluation Scribe back into the lead.  You will be responsible for writing down the group’s answers to the questions found on the POST-ACTIVITY EVALUATION form.  Click on the link to print out the form.
