The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity

Good lectures are simple. It is amazing how little conceptual ground can be covered in one hour. Only three or four central points can be covered thoroughly, in part because most points should be illustrated with a vivid example. Although examples are time-consuming and may seem conceptually redundant, they are essential. Good examples captivate students imaginations, activate their memories, and help them make the transition from abstraction to what they already know. More important, examples give students time to process and integrate what has been said. In lectures, as in readings, it is better to set a realistic limit on what you want to get across and then teach those points thoroughly

Little Stories

An architect built a cluster of office buildings around a cluster of green. When construction was completed, the landscape crew asked him where he wanted the sidewalks.

“Just plant the grass solidly between the buildings,” was his reply.

By late summer the new lawn was laced with paths of trodden grass between the buildings. The paths turned in to easy curves and were sized according to traffic flow.

In the fall, the architect simply paved the paths. Not only did the paths have a design beauty, they responded directly to the users needs.

Work smarter, not harder.

Puppies for sale

A store owner was tacking a sgn bove his door that read “Puppies for sale.” Sogns like that have a way of attracting small children, and sire enough a little boy appeared under the store owner’s sign. “ How much are you going to sell the puppies for?” he asked. The store owner replied, “Anywhere from $30 to $50. “ The little boy reached into his pocket and pulled out some change. “ I have $2.37,” he said. “ Can I please look at them?” The store owner smiled and whistled and out of the kennel came lady, who ran down the aisle of his store followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur.

One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the boy singled out the lagging puppy and said. “What’s wrong with that little dog?” The store owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn’t have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would always be lame. The little boy became excited. “That is the puppy that I want to buy.”

The store owner said, “No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you. “ The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight at the owner’s eyes pointing his finger, and said, “I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. In fact, I’ll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.” The store owner countered, “You  really don’t want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to jump and run and play like the other puppies. “

To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a baldly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the store owner and softly replied, “Well I don’t run so well myself, and the little

PRESENT

The Vietnamese Buddhist monk and philosopher, Thich Nhat Hanh writes about enjoying a good cup of tea. You must be completely awake in the present to enjoy the tea. Only in the awareness of the present can your hands feel the present warmth of the cup. Only in the present can you savor the aroma, taste the sweetness, appreciate the delicacy. If you are ruminating about the past or worrying about the future, you will completely miss the experience of enjoying the cup of tea. You will look down at the cup of tea and it will be gone

Life is like that. If you are not fully present, you will look around and it will be gone. You will have missed the feel, the aroma, the delicacy and beauty of life. It will seem to be speeding past you

The past is finished. Learn from it and let it go. The future is not even here yet. Plan for it, but do not waste your time worrying about. Worrying is worthless. When you stop ruminating about what has already happened, when you stop worrying about what might never happen, then you will be in the present moment/ Then you will begin to experience joy in life.
